Pre-Columbian. Michoacán, ancient Mexico. Archaic Period c. 200 BC. A fine ceramic female head from a figurine, of the classic "Double Eye" type. She is depicted with expressive features, wide eyes and mouth, and a large headdress. Old collection tag on back. This was a fertility-type figurine, found near Lake Patzcuaro, Mexico in the 1950s to early 1960s. Originally depicting a pregnant woman, these figures were planted with the seed corn as a votive offering to the goddess of agriculture. Figurine measures 1.875” high.
